What to Wear
Here are a few tips to help get you to work in good shape:
- Start your Commute "Comfortably Cool" - As a general rule, when you walk outside in the morning dressed to ride your bicycle to work, you should feel a little cool so that you will not overheat on the way in.
- Powder up - Keep lots of baby or talcum powder in your medicine chest at home and at work. Baby wipes are also good for a quick wipe down before that morning meeting. This will keep you feeling- and smelling fresh all day.
- Wear Bright Colors - OK, OK, it is sometimes challenging to balance fashion with safety and you will obviously making your own choices here, but this is important. If you shop around, you should be able to find light jackets with reflective strips that are not very offensive. Remember that YOU are the fashion-setter in your parts, so feel free to go wild!
- Wear a Brain Bucket - Your co-workers are depending on you to show up at work with your head on your shoulders, so let's keep it that way! A helmet is one of the most important elements of biking safety. Buy an attractive, comfortable helmet and wear it every time you ride a bicycle. If you are worried about the way you look wearing a helmet, keep looking. There has to be one out there for you!
- Wrap your Ankle - We recommend buying a bike with a chain guard to protect your clothing from the chain. If you don't have that luxury, definitely consider buying an inexpensive ankle wrap that keeps clothes tight around your right ankle as you pedal. Between nasty grease stains and pants-destroying tears, the chain can wreak havoc on your wardrobe without this essential item. (Oh, and don't even try tucking your pants into your socks - it is bad form and they always fall out anyway.)
