We Have a Vision...

Velocommuter imagines a society in which:

  • Riding a bicycle to work is a common way to commute;
  • Bikers have access to bicycles which are designed with fashion in addition to function in mind;
  • Bikers do not feel inferior to or marginalized by car commuters; and
  • Biking is given credence for all of its health, economic, and environmental benefits to society in general.
Get to work!

How might society achieve this vision? We provide you with the following ideas that shape Velocommuter's response to that question, and suggest that you in turn imagine how this might be a better world than the one we have today.

Imagine a world in which biking to work is encouraged by community planners and employers. Bikers are able to travel throughout communities safely and efficiently. Biking to work is encouraged by employers, who offer locker rooms and showers to employees who commute in by bike. Just think of how much the productivity at your workplace will increase when employees come in fresh from a quick ride and a shower – no more cases of the ‘Mondays’!

Velo What?

"Velo" is the French word for 'Bicycle.' We think this name is more fun to say than, say "Bicycle Commuter". We also like Velo because Lance Armstrong didn't become so famous by winning the Tour de Georgia (no offense to our buddies in the Peach State)!! The French have long been enamoured with the bicycle and, for that, we salute you!

Imagine shopping for a commuter bike and being surprised at the incredible selection available. Travel to a meeting with your board of directors on the latest in urban bicycle styling. Commute to the office at your own pace with a soy macchiato in the drink holder. Options abound for traveling to and fro in the latest models of commuting bikes.

Imagine roads designed with biker safety and efficiency as a major factor in the city planning process. With roads marked appropriately, bikers feel welcome to take to the streets. Travel to and from work is often quicker on a bike because finding a parking space can be often much easier on a bike than in your car. Motorists are cautious about pulling out in front of bikers because they have been educated about bicycles in their motorist education classes.

Remember your lock!

Imagine communities that embrace and encourage biking by educating the public about all of the benefits to biking, over driving to work. Communities recognize that, by encouraging biking, they will save costs by enticing people out of their cars and on to their bikes. Commuters realize that they will live healthier and happier if they can fit in a half-hour of exercise every day, while traveling to and from work!

Finally, imagine a place where bike commuters can meet and share common ideas. Enter velocommuter.org. Here is a website that, like no other website on the internet, focuses solely on encouraging more Americans to ride a bicycle to work or school. Velocommuter is a place to meet other bicycle commuters, share ideas, and inspire car commuters to dust off their bikes and ride to work.
